The house was originally built in 1977. In 2003 the house was purchased by Eduard and Irmgard Bekker.

Several months of planning and a dream finally came to a reality when most of the house was rebuilt, extended and converted to the building Villa Lugano Guesthouse is today.

The idea came along when Eduard and Irmgard travelled to Europe and fell in love with a town in the south of Switzerland, but, with mostly an Italian influence (as it is located on the Italian border) called Lugano.

Other influences on the style of the house came from Portofino in Italy and also the south of France.
